Short answers to what people ask us most. Can't find yours? Ask Teacup in the corner, or write to us.
Is this the official Life in the UK test?
No. Teacup Test is an independent practice course. It is not connected to the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration or GOV.UK. You book the real test on GOV.UK, which says: "This is the only official government service for booking the Life in the UK Test." We are not the official handbook, practice app or e-learning course sold through the official Life in the UK shop.
Are the mock tests really free?
Yes. 8 full mock tests and 5 chapter drills are free, with every answer explained. There is no sign-up and no card. Take them as often as you like.
What does £6.99 get me?
The full course until your test day: unlimited timed mock tests from the whole question bank, My mistakes, flashcards for dates, people, places and numbers, explanations in 8 languages, read-aloud, your practice readiness, reminders before your test and no adverts.
How long does my course last?
Until 14 days after the test date you give us. It is never less than 30 days and never more than 120 days from the day you buy it. With no test date it lasts 60 days. You can add or move your test date at any time.
What if I don't pass?
After your test, tell us your resit date and your course carries on, free, until 14 days after it. This is the resit extension, and you can use it up to 3 times. The fee for the resit is paid to GOV.UK when you book. We never charge, pay or refund the GOV.UK test fee.
Does it renew?
Never. It is not a subscription. We never charge your card again.
Are these the real test questions?
No. The real test's questions are not published. Ours are written in our own words from the facts in the official handbook, in four kinds of question: one answer, true or false, which of two statements is right, and choose two. Each one is checked against its fact, a second AI model re-tests them, and any question you report is re-tested, usually within the hour: how we test questions.
Can I read the explanations in my language?
Yes, on the full course: Traditional Chinese, Urdu, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Arabic and Polish. Translations are made by machine as a learning aid. The questions stay in English, so you practise the words you will see on the day. See an example.
Can it read the questions aloud?
Yes. Read-aloud uses your device's own voices, so it costs nothing extra and works on most phones. You can choose the voice and the speed. Try it.
How long is the test and what is the pass mark?
GOV.UK says: "You’ll have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions about British traditions and customs." and "You must score 75% or more to pass the test." That is 18 out of 24. Sources: GOV.UK: Life in the UK Test and What happens at the test.
Do I need the test, or am I exempt?
We can't tell you: that would be advice about your own situation. GOV.UK explains who needs the test, and a regulated immigration adviser can advise you, for example one registered with the Immigration Advice Authority (formerly the OISC) or a solicitor (GOV.UK: find an immigration adviser).
Can I get a refund?
Your course starts as soon as you pay, and at checkout you agree that the 14-day right to cancel then ends. If something doesn't work as we describe, we fix it. If we can't, we refund you (or give you extra time, if you prefer). Bought it twice by mistake? Refund the second one in one click on your settings page within 14 days. Tea for two: while the second place is unclaimed, you can take back £4 for it in one click on your course settings page within 14 days of buying. A top-up bought before your course ends can be cancelled for a full refund there until its days begin. Our refund policy.
Two of us are taking the test.
Tea for two is £10.99 for both of you. You each get your own login, your own course and your own test date. The second person claims their place within 120 days of the purchase. While the second place is unclaimed, you can take back £4 for it in one click on your course settings page within 14 days of buying.
